Poker is a numbers game; it is played for money using a deck of cards marked with symbols and numbers. Everything about it has to do with numbers and there are always patterns to be found in numbers. Not only are there patterns to be found in numbers, but your poker actions are also dictated by acquired patterns and it is possible to actually use patterns to play profitable poker.

Learning a poker strategy that will make you a winner has to be the goal of every poker player on the face of the planet. No one plays this or any other game for the pleasure of losing, surely? Therefore it is vital to stay on top of your game, by reading all the right books and articles, practicing all the right games with the right opponents for your level of expertise, building and managing a bankroll and learning to use past experience to help with your decision making skills.
Reading and applying the information you have learned to a real life situation is not always as easy as some players think. You have to be confident at a poker table, stick to correct poker play, and learn to deal with in-play situations as they arise. How do the experts know what decisions to make for any given situation within seconds? Empirical knowledge!!

Empirical knowledge is propositional knowledge based on learning through experience and observation, and it becomes second nature. Physics is based on this codified form of knowledge, the same as an Inuit knows when the ice is going to melt and a good poker player knows when the patterns are going to change and what is expected next. Past experience is used for decision making.

Unless you have a photographic memory, it is impossible to remember every single hand ever played. In deference to this, the human brain develops patterns for decision making and from the very first hand of poker played these patterns start to develop. This is situational thinking as apposed to intuitive thinking.

Your brain remembers that a pocket pair with a matching card on the board is a strong hand. The same process takes place every time the cards are dealt and rhythms and patterns develop. The one decision a poker player has to make based on these rhythms and patterns is whether to invest money, how much this should be, or should they not bother. These decisions are obviously best made based on past patterns learned. The same as the Inuit deciding if the ice is strong enough to traverse on his hunting trip – he knows yes, or no, from past lessons, either his or his ancestors, this is not intuition it is empirical knowledge.

There is no time to make calculations or decisions based on every item of information you have ever assimilated while playing poker. It is the patterns which decide! Fortunately the brain is incredible creative at remembering these patterns and yes, this will help you to win when playing poker.
